Overview

Recap ("the App") is a chess training app that analyzes your games and generates puzzles from your mistakes. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why, how it is handled, and what rights you have over your data.

Data We Collect

Chess Username

When you connect your Chess.com or Lichess account, we use your username to fetch your publicly available game history through those platforms' public APIs. Your username is stored locally on your device and sent to our analytics service (PostHog) to associate usage events with your account.

Game Data

Your game PGNs are fetched from Chess.com or Lichess public APIs and stored locally on your device. All Stockfish analysis runs entirely on your device. No game data is sent to our servers.

Analytics Data

We use PostHog to collect anonymous usage data to improve the app. This includes:

  • App launches and session duration
  • Puzzle solve events (correct/incorrect, motif type)
  • Feature usage (which screens you visit)
  • Crash reports and performance metrics

PostHog generates an anonymous user ID to associate these events. This anonymous ID may be linked to your chess username for analytics purposes but is never shared with third parties or used for advertising.

Subscription Data

Subscription purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status. We do not have access to your payment information, credit card number, or Apple ID credentials.

  • Photos or media
  • Health or fitness data
  • Advertising identifiers (IDFA)
  • Your Chess.com or Lichess password

On-Device Processing

All chess analysis is performed locally on your device using Stockfish 17. Game data, puzzles, and progress are stored in your device's local database. No chess data is transmitted to external servers.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services. Your data may be processed by these providers in accordance with their own privacy policies:

International Data Transfers

Our third-party service providers (PostHog, RevenueCat) may process data on servers located outside your country of residence, including in the United States. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your analytics data to these providers. These providers maintain appropriate safeguards to protect your data in accordance with applicable law.

Data Security

All network communication between the App and external services uses HTTPS/TLS encryption. Authentication tokens are stored securely in your device's keychain. Game data and analysis results are stored in a local on-device database that is protected by your device's built-in security (passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID). While no system is 100% secure, we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Data Retention

Analytics data is retained by PostHog for up to 12 months. Local data on your device persists until you delete the app or delete your account. You can request deletion of your analytics data by contacting us.

Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access – Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Deletion – Request deletion of your personal data, including analytics data associated with your account.
  • Correction – Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
  • Portability – Request your data in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Opt-out – Opt out of analytics data collection by contacting us.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@recapchess.com. We will respond to your request within 30 days.

Account Deletion

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Settings screen within the App. Upon deletion, your local data is removed from your device and we will delete any analytics data associated with your account from our third-party providers within 30 days. You may also request account deletion by emailing support@recapchess.com.

GDPR (European Economic Area)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), our lawful bases for processing your personal data are:

  • Consent – You consent to analytics data collection when you use the App.
  • Contract – Processing your chess username and game data is necessary to provide the App's core functionality.
  • Legitimate interest – We have a legitimate interest in understanding how the App is used to improve it.

You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your data has been processed unlawfully.

CCPA (California)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of its sale. We do not sell your personal information to third parties. To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us at support@recapchess.com.

Data Breach Notification

In the unlikely event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify affected users via email or in-app notification within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach, in accordance with applicable law.

Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will promptly delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@recapchess.com.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. If we make material changes, we will notify you via the App or by email before the changes take effect.
